Outside each of the entrance gaps of the smaller camp is a short bank and ditch, known as a titulum, which in full size camps provided some protection against direct assault on the entrance. Despite the suggestive place-name this group of camps was only discovered, from the air, about thirty years ago. The route of the Roman road south from Dolddinas towards Cwm Prysor has never been worked out fully until recently. On a flight in May , four new practice camps were discovered on the plateau to the west of Llyn Hiraethlyn. Following this, careful inspection from the air and on the ground led to the discovery of the Roman road.

It takes a fairly direct line through the low hills south of Dolddinas, past the new camps and zig-zagging down the slopes to the south of the llyn. The road is not easy to see on this photograph, but its line is emphasised by the large shallow quarry scoops on either side, which were used to win gravel for the road surface. Near the foot of the picture the road turns sharp left, to descend a steep slope, heading towards the corner of the modern field walls.
