Run Time: 93 minutes. Olive Penderghast Emma Stone envisions herself as a modern day Hester Prynne the adulterous character from the classic English novel The Scarlet Letter after she lies about her sexual activities on the weekend. Needled for details by her best friend Rhiannon Alyson Michalka , the quiet wallflower eventually makes up a story about losing her virginity to a nameless college boy.
In the time it takes to text or tweet, the news rips through the school and makes the previously unnoticed girl the subject of a lot of attention. Their leader is a girl Amanda Bynes intent on saving the sinner. While the script condemns the idea of judging others, it does nothing to negate the negative stereotype of Christians portrayed in this film. Like most lies, one leads to another and soon Olive finds herself a new occupation. It may not be the oldest profession known to women, but it is close.
Supposedly sleeping with a girl of her reputation will improve their own standing with their classmates and increase their chances of getting some real action.
Taking her cues from the maligned Hester who embroidered a scarlet "A" on her dresses as a sign of shame, Olive ditches her regular school clothes in favor of lacy corsets and other bedroom attire on which she sews her own red letters. Her mother also hopes Olive will become pregnant so that she and her husband can raise the child. In the world of social networking and instant messaging, nothing remains private for long. Totally Inappropriate A website recommended this movie for teens.
It is rated PG and so I thought it would be good to watch with my newly 13 year old. My husband and I were appalled to say the least. This movie went from bad to worse to horrendous! First, the swearing begins immediately and is throughout the movie. Second, the "one" white lie turns into more and more lies about increasingly disturbing behavior by both kids and adults.
The movie ends with her doing a strip tease on the gym floor and basically blackmailing the principal from stopping it to get everyone to watch her live feed instead of the game. It sensationalizes bad behavior and she ends with her happy and with the guy she likes in the end. The only one hurt was her "favorite" teacher who was trying to keep the kids on the straight and narrow.
She uncovers the fact that his wife is having sex with other students and passing on STD's. No lasting repercussions for her though.
Just a horrible movie!!!! Helped me decide 1. Read my mind. And parents, please please please note the subject matter of this movie. It is not appropriate for your kids. It's really not. This title contains: Positive Messages. Positive role models.
Had useful details 1. Parent of a 6 and year-old Written by mommymovie January 8, It was ok for my thirteen year old but even admit it was a little too inappropriate.
My 13 year old daughter saw this movie. She said she deeply appreciated my approval of letting her watch this movie, but she also admit that it was not age appropriate. She just turned thirteen, so she assumed a PG - 13 rated movie would be fine - although she said it was not appropriate. Sometimes we have to trust our children. All of her friends said that they saw it and that it was amazing.. Truthfully, if it will make her happy to go to school saying she saw this movie - I'm ok with that.
I just want her to know that there's a range in between PG - 13 movies, and maybe this was more at the apposite end of what she needed to see. Positive Messages. Helped me decide. Had useful details. Adult Written by mamamemer December 27, Potentially dangerous to young girls. Easy A has one scene early on where Emma Stone is walking across school and says something along the lines of "No one noticed me before they all thought I had sex, now everyone notices me.
Anyone who has actually been to high school knows how unrealistic this movie is, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it to girls in middle school. There is also some religion bashing, not that I am religious, or particularly care, but it's not an accurate representation of the majority of young Christian women.
Adult Written by FamilyofSix May 21, Bash on Christian living The first thirty minutes were nothing but bad language, sex talk from high schoolers, and Christian bashing, so we turned it off. The characters were terrible role models for teens or anyone else. I wish I had not rented this one.
